Art Lovers And Patrons : Germany
The biggest Cezanne exhibition of all time, held in Tubingen’s Kunsthalle in 1993, was virtually deluged with visitors, and the situation was no different at the Renoir exhibition held at the beginning of 1996. Lavishly designed and masterfully printed (but nevertheless inexpensive), the exhibition catalogues not only feature the works on display but also present a comprehensive introduction to both the theme and the artistic sphere of the exhibition, as can be seen from the exhibition “Max Lieber-mann, the German Impressionist” held in Bremen’s Kunsthalle early in 1996.
Art from non-European countries attracts considerable interest in Germany. The exhibition “Women of Ancient Egypt” drew 250,000 visitors to Cologne. The city of Aachen presented “Forgotten Cities on the Indus", and Munich staged an exhibition focusing on Mongolian culture. From June to November 1994, Essen hosted the exhibition “Old China - Men and Gods in the Middle Kingdom", which was also featured in Munich from December 1995 to March 1996. The largest festival of modern art in the world is Kassel’s “documenta", which takes place every five years and drew more than 631,000 visitors in 1997.
