The EKD is a community of 24 largely independent Lutheran, Reformed and United regional churches. Church administrative regions are not identical with the territories of the federal states. The EKD’s main legislative body is the Synod, its chief executive body the Council. Member churches participate in the work of the EKD through the Church Conference. The Church Office in Hanover is its central administrative headquarters. The Evangelical Church is a member of the World Council of Churches. It cooperates closely with the Roman Catholic Church.
