Travel. More than two thirds of the people in Germany take a vacation trip of more than five days’ duration each year; ten percent travel twice a year. The average German takes about 26 day trips as well. Nearly half of the population take one or more short trips of two to four days duration. On vacation trips the vast majority of people seek rest and relaxation in pleasant countryside, whereas one-day excursions and short trips usually focus on specific activities (visiting relatives, attending cultural and sports events, sightseeing, pursuing hobbies, etc.). One fourth of all Germans spend their annual holiday in their own country. The most popular destinations abroad are Spain, Austria and Italy, followed by France, Greece, Turkey, the United States and Scandinavia. About half of the German travelers book a package tour from a travel agent.
