Apart from the excellent trunk roads, there is also a dense network of well-maintained federal highways and local roads. Not only hikers have a wide variety of well-marked routes of all lengths to choose from: Germany is also easily accessible to cyclists, thanks to the many bike paths that have been specially constructed for this purpose.
More than 33,000 trains of the Deutsche Bahn AG transport more than four million people over some 40,000 kilometers of track every day. Traveling at speeds of up to 280 km/h and equipped with ultra-modern amenities and innovative technology, the ICE is setting new standards in high-speed travel between Germany’s major cities.
Of key importance to international air transport is the Frankfurt am Main Airport. As the hub for continental Europe, it registered 38.8 million passengers and about 385,000 starts and landings in 1996. As the home base for Lufthansa German Airlines, and thanks to coordination of schedules with partner airlines, it offers passengers arriving from Europe and overseas fast connections to the metropolises of Germany and Europe.
The formalities for foreign visitors are straightforward. Citizens of many countries can now enter Germany as tourists for up to three months without a visa. There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign exchange which may be brought into or taken out of the country.
