German airports are operated as private companies. Since 1993 air traffic control has been the responsibility of the DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (the successor of the Federal Administration of Air Navigation Services), which is organized under private law and is wholly owned by the Federation. Airport and air safety standards are constantly being updated in order to cope with the heavy congestion in Germany’s airspace.
