The German Unity Transport Projects : Germany
The old federal states have a good transport network. Modernization, renewal and expansion of the network in the eastern states is progressing rapidly. This infrastructure is crucial for the region’s economic recovery. It has been estimated that this will require investment running into billions up to the year 2000. Priority is being given to west-east transport links, since they will play a key role in the process of merging the two parts of the country and in promoting economic growth in the eastern states.
Since 1991 the government has been supporting 17 particularly important road, waterway and rail projects, known as the German Unity transport projects, which will largely be completed by the year 2000. The Federal Government has thus far allocated a total of nearly DM 70 billion for expansion and improvement of the transport infrastructure in the new federal states.
