Energy Supply : Germany
At the end of 1995, the Federal Republic’s natural gas reserves were about 365 billion cubic meters. Natural gas is imported from a number of countries, and supplies are secured until well into the next decade. In 1996 natural gas accounted for about 21.6 percent of primary energy consumption.
Germany has not mined any uranium since the end of 1980. It imports the enriched uranium needed for the operation of nuclear power stations, and it has adequate supplies through the foreign holdings of German mining companies. Nuclear energy continues to account for a substantial proportion of the electricity generated by public power stations (about 34 percent in 1996).
