Consumer Protection : Germany
Consumer Protection : Germany
The range of goods and services is growing. Every year more than 1,000 new products come onto the market in Germany alone. Since the launching of the European single market on 1 January 1993, the range has become even greater and even more confusing. Products made in Germany compete with goods imported from all over the world. Consumers have a greater choice than ever before. But such a wide variety is a problem for them, too, since they find it increasingly difficult to judge product quality and value for money - or perhaps even safety and potential hazards to health. All too often buyers are also exposed to dishonest sales methods. As a result, consumer protection now plays an important role in the life of the community.
The purpose of consumer information is to make the market more transparent and help people make rational decisions on the basis of objective evaluations of quality and price comparisons. Consumers also need advice on their rights with regard to contracts, insurance, loans, investments, travel, purchases of consumer goods, etc., as well as advice on nutrition and issues pertaining to environmental pollution. They likewise need assistance in the areas of building and home living, hobbies and recreational activities, energy conservation and consumer rights.
