The Atlantic Alliance : Germany
At the NATO summit in January 1994, the Alliance reaffirmed its offer to support peacekeeping operations and other operations under the authority of the United Nations Security Council or the responsibility of the OSCE on a case-by-case basis. It has participated in the enforcement of the embargo along the Adriatic and has enforced the ban on flights in the airspace of Bosnia. Starting in December 1995, the military aspects of the peace agreement for Bosnia and Herzegovina were implemented within the framework of a multinational peace implementation force (IFOR)
under NATO command; the total troop strength was about 60,000. The Bundeswehr participated with a contingent of about 4,000 soldiers. Since the beginning of 1997, 3,000 German soldiers have been deployed in IFOR’s successor, the Stabilization Force (SFOR).
