Halifax
On a peninsula that juts into the North Atlantic , Halifax is the largest population centre East of Montreal. It is the provincial capital, with several universities, associated and independent research, an increasing IT sector, a burgeoning arts scene, and retains both its importance as a port and a steady naval presence.
The old city of Halifax is small and friendly, its neighbourhoods all within a long but manageable walk or short bus ride’s distance of each other. The old and the new mingle in Halifax , with upper-end restaurants and stores restoring old buildings downtown, while the big box stores and subdivisions continue to increase urban sprawl; beautiful wood Victorian homes sit proudly alongside new condo complexes. Though certainly not immune to problems, Halifax ’s grass-roots movements, and the simple willingness to nod and smile at a stranger are evidence of a sense of community that pervades the city.
The boundaries of the Halifax Regional Municipality stretch quite far off the peninsula, encompassing a variety of different areas and becoming quite rural before you officially leave HRM. Part of Halifax ’s appeal lies in its proximity to stunning coastal scenery, charming towns, and the fresh produce of the Annapolis Valley .
