Derby is a city in the East Midlands of England. It lies on the banks of the River Derwent and is surrounded by the county of Derbyshire. In the 2001 census its population was recorded at 221,708.
Derby is a thriving city at the heart of England. Part of the East Midlands, the city is the starting point of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and home to international companies such as Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Royal Crown Derby.
The City Council continues to be rated among the best in England and Wales by the independent Audit Commission, which has awarded it four-star status - the highest possible.
The Council provides all local government services to the people who live in Derby, including schools, social services, environmental health and transportation.
