Der Bregenzerwald hat etwa die Halfte seiner insgesamt 400 km Winterwanderwege in Höhen zwischen 500 und 2000 m einheitlich beschildert - und ist mit diesem Projekt österreichische Pionierregion. Dazu ist auch ein umfangreicher Wanderprospekt erscheinen, der die 22 schönsten Wege beschreibt.
Pinkfarbene und somit im Schnee gut sichtbare Schilder weisen den Weg. Die Winterwanderwege verlaufen teils auf bestehenden Sommerwegen fuhren aber auch quer durch die Landschaft uber verschneite Wiesen und werden dort mit Pistengeraten prapariert. Sie eignen sich fur Wanderungen und Spaziergange zwischen einer Stunde und vier Stunden und reichen vom sonnigen Sulzberg bis hinauf zum 2.000 m hohen Diedamskopf und ins Hochtannberggebiet.
Besonders idyllisch ist die 18 km lange Route von Sibratsgfall nach Schönenbach und retour. Eine der beliebtesten Routen geht von Au-Schoppernau zur Bergkristall-Hutte auf 1.200 Metern Höhe. Der gut praparierte Weg fuhrt durch das stille und landschaftlich eindrucksvolle Durrenbachtal zur Bergkristallhutte, vorbei am hochaufragenden Felsmassive des Zitterklapfenstockes. Zuruck geht’s auf derselben Strecke - zu Fuß oder mit einer Rodel. Die Gehzeit hin und retour betragt ca. 3,5 Stunden.
Damit ist der Bregenzerwald die erste Ferienregion vergleichbarer Größe in Österreich, die ihr Winterwanderwegekonzept in dieser Art ausgebaut hat.
