Over the past decades the province of Salzburg has attained a leading economic position both in Austria and in comparison with the rest of Europe. The net per capita output is well above the Austrian and European average and has exceeded the 15 billion Euro mark. Since the Second World War, economic growth in Salzburg has generally been above average.

The strength and dynamism of the region can ultimately be seen in the fact that Salzburg pays far more taxes to the central government than the amount of money that flows back to the province. Salzburg’s special geographic situation in the midst of the powerful economic region Munich - Stuttgart - Milan has always been advantageous but at the same time presents a challenge. Since Austria became a member of the European Union, links with Munich and its surroundings - a region particularly active in the field of communications - innovation and co-operation have been intensified.
