The Lower Austrian Wine-Growing Areas
Carnuntum
Carnuntum lies in the southeastern part of Lower Austria and is considered a “climber among Austrian winegrowing regions, with a new generation of top vintners, a climate conducive to lush, powerful wines, and an abundance of interesting places full of antique charm. The landscape is particularly impressive around the villages Göttlesbrunn, Arbesthal and Höflein, as well as Prellenkirchen and Berg.
Special Tip: The Roman Wine Route and the Archaeological Park hark back to the region’s Ancient Roman roots.
Area Wines: In Carnuntum, powerful red wines thrive, particularly Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. Among white wines, the best are Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Thermenregion
Lower Austria’s southernmost winegrowing area impresses visitors with its variety, tradition, and elegant, almost urbane style. Buffets at many of the wine taverns in Thermenregion are comparable to the bill of fare at gourmet restaurants. It’s perhaps not surprising, given the area’s other claim to fame: thermal spas that have attracted well-heeled visitors for centuries.
