The Lower Austrian Wine-Growing Areas
Area Wines: Donauland offers some of the best spicy, peppery Grüner Veltliners, lightly spicy Frührote Veltliners, and reds full of character (the grape variety Zweigelt dominates). Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Riesling complete the spectrum of white wines.
Weinviertel
At more than 160 square kilometers, the Weinviertel is Austria’s largest winegrowing area, famous for its picturesque cellar streets. There are more than 675 Wine Route businesses located here, ranging from wine growers, to wine taverns and wine shops, to inns and bed & breakfasts. The Weinviertel Wine Route stretches 400 kilometers long and passes through 77 wine villages. (The Wine Route divides the region into three sub-sections: Western Weinviertel, Veltliner Land, and Southern Weinviertel.)
Area Wines: As you’d expect from the area’s size, a large variety of wines are available in the Wienviertel. In addition to Grüner Veltliners (which are particularly peppery here), one finds elegant Chardonnays and Weissburgunders (Pinot Blancs) as well as excellent red wines (Zweigelt, Blauer Portugieser), which especially thrive in the south.
