The Lower Austrian Wine-Growing Areas
Kamptal
Austria’s largest wine town, Langenlois, is located in Kamptal. The area features rock soils, loam soils and loess soils. The legendary vineyard site Heiligenstein is a must, offering world-famous wines along with an impressive view of the entire region.
Special Tip: LOISIUM, a remarkable new multi-media wine museum, recently opened at the edge of Langenlois. The stunning Visitors’ Centre and Cellar World offer a one-of-a-kind experience, engaging all of the senses in the story of wine, its history, science, and mythology. (Visit www.loisium.at for information.)
Area Wines: The Kamptal is famous for typically peppery Grüner Veltliners and elegantly fruity Rieslings. More and more frequently, Kamptal’s Chardonnays are being singled out for their quality.
Donauland
Donauland is a large winegrowing area (more than 2,731 hectares) that stretches up to the boundaries of Vienna. Its wine centers are the villages on the slopes of the Wagram, a massive terrace along the Danube, as well as the historic town of Klosterneuburg. Donauland is well known for its popular wine taverns.
