The Lower Austrian Wine-Growing Areas
Traisental
At just under 7 square kilometers, Traisental is Lower Austria’s smallest winegrowing area, as well as its youngest – at least in designation. Although it only became “autonomous in 1995, Traisental (like Austria itself) has a vinicultural tradition that extends back to the Bronze Age.
A hike through Traisental’s hilly vineyards offers marvelous panoramic views of the Traisen and Danube Valleys as far as Kahlenberg and Bisamberg. A visit to one of the area’s wine taverns is an absolute must – not simply because these “buschenschanken offer a uniquely Austrian opportunity to drink wine in enchanting surroundings, but also because many of the best local wines can only be tasted here.
Special Tip: Follow the educational wine path in Traismauer.
Area Wines: Grüner Veltliners prevail, but the range of varieties also includes Welschriesling, Rheinriesling, Chardonnay, and an increasing number of red wines.
