Omaha Beach

In June Omaha beach, visitors will enjoy holidays cottages sunbathers and swimmers merrily splashing their day away in the clear water of the north Sea. If you`d been here at dawn on 6 june 1944 though the scene would have been a little different the see was red with the blood of 1000 allied troops who died here the beach form apart with bombs dropped by allied planes supporting their landing and the gently rising hills above the beach littered with the bodies of the german forces defending the beach. The D-day landing codenamed operation over load were the largest military operation in history and the beaches of normandy bore the brunt of the invasion. Farly on that chilly june morning in 1944, almost 7000 boats hit the beaches along this coast line and tens of thousands of soldiers from canada, the USA, UK and elsewhere began pouring on to french shores. Two and a half thousand of them landed on omaha to be met with a wall of german gunfire many were simply mowed down as they exited the boats some made it to the ridge over looking the beach and sheltered from the gun fire there and othere were gunned down on the beach over four horrific hours the allied troops managed to capture the beach.
